Florence and The Machine // Cosmic Love

A falling star fell from your heart and landed in my eyes
I screamed aloud, as it tore through them, and now it's left me blind

The stars, the moon, they have all been blown out
You left me in the dark
No dawn, no day, I'm always in this twilight
In the shadow of your heart

And in the dark, I can hear your heartbeat
I tried to find the sound
But then it stopped, and I was in the darkness,
So darkness I became

Day 1 - Favourite Song

Fix You by Coldplay

A lot of people think I’m weird for liking Coldplay. I don’t care how mainstream they are. I don’t care how their sound is. I like it.

This song, especially it’s lyrics, are perfectly amazing and absolutely beautiful.

When you try your best but you don’t succeed
When you get what you want but not what you need
When you feel so tired but you can’t sleep
Stuck in reverse

And the tears come streaming down your face
When you lose something you can’t replace
When you love someone but it goes to waste
Could it be worse?

Lights will guide you home
And ignite your bones
And I will try to fix you

The lyrics, especially the bolded ones, are wonderful for me. I love how purely inspirational this song is; conveying a message that, while things may be bad, and getting worse, there’s something out there to look forward to, and there’s someone out there who will always be there to help you, in spite of everything.

I listen to this song whenever I’m feeling gloomy. It’s so quiet at the beginning, very churchlike and soothing, and slowly, slowly it builds. All you hear is Chris Martin’s voice, and it’s just so perfect. When it reaches the ‘guitar solo’, where, in the video, he goes from his languid walking to an all out run to the stage, and it builds up in tempo, it’s almost a feeling that, from the gutters, someone’s grabbed your hand, and takes you with them high into the air, soaring over all your problems, even if for a little while.

I especially associate this song with a place - camping, three years ago, in the most beautiful place I’ve ever been. I was with my family, I was having the most relaxing time possible, and everything was right.

This song gives a warm feeling - a feeling of comfort, a feeling of beauty, a feeling of reassurance, and a feeling of happiness.

That’s why this song will probably be my all time favourite.

I can smell the death on the sheets
Covering me
I can’t believe this the end
I can hear those sad memories
Still haunting me
So many things I’d do again

But this is my deathbed
I lie here alone
If I close my eyes tonight
I know I’ll be home

Tattered fingers
Lingering on the warm and foolish
Hardened faces
Graceless, we’ll lose the battle
We will always be a light
You can see it from the surface, see it
We will always be a light

Casimir Pulaski Day - Sufjan Stevens

Tuesday night at the bible study
We lift our hands and pray over your body
But nothing ever happens

I remember at Michael’s house
In the living room when you kissed my neck
And I almost touched your blouse

In the morning at the top of the stairs
When your father found out what we did that night
And you told me you were scared

Oh the glory when you ran outside
With your shirt tucked in and your shoes untied
And you told me not to follow you

In the morning when you finally go
And the nurse runs in with her head hung low
And the cardinal hits the window

In the morning in the winter shade
On the first of March on the holiday
I thought I saw you breathing

His father was a drinker
And his mother cried in bed
Folding John Wayne’s t-shirts
When the swingset hit his head
The neighbors they adored him
For his humor and his conversation
Look underneath the house there
Find the few living things, rotting fast, in their sleep
Oh, the dead

Twenty-seven people
Even more, they were boys
With their cars, summer jobs
Oh my God

Are you one of them?

He dressed up like a clown for them
With his face paint white and red
And on his best behavior
In a dark room on the bed
He kissed them all
He’d kill ten thousand people
With a sleight of his hand
Running far, running fast to the dead
He took off all their clothes for them
He put a cloth on their lips
Quiet hands, quiet kiss on the mouth

And in my best behavior
I am really just like him
Look beneath the floor boards
For the secrets I have hid

Class from the musical Chicago.

A deleted scene from the film featuring one of favourite songs from the soundtrack. The fact that two women are singing about the pathetic state of society (in a manner unfitting ladies, no less!) adds a flair to this song.

Whatever happened to fair dealing?
And pure ethics
And nice manners?
Why is it everyone now is a pain in the ass?
Whatever happened to class?

Class.
Whatever happened to, “Please, may I?”
And, “Yes, thank you?”
And, “How charming?”
Now, every son of a bitch is a snake in the grass
Whatever happened to class?

But your mama thought there was somethin’ wrong
Didn’t want you sleeping with a boy too long
It’s a serious thing in a grown-up world
Maybe you’d be better with a Barbie girl

Won’t you shake the poor sinner’s hand?

There! Right! There! from Legally Blonde The Musical

Elle:
There! Right There!
Look at that tan, that tinted skin!
Look at the killer shape he’s in!
Look at that slightly stubbly chin!
Oh please, he’s gay, totally gay!

Calahan:

I’m not about to celebrate.
Every trait could indicate the totally straight expatriate.
This guy’s not gay, I say not gay.

All:

That is the elephant in the room.
Well is it relevant to assume
That a man who wears perfume
Is automatically matically fay?

Daughter of Delta-Nu,
Soon to be fiancée,
Now that a man chose you
Your life begins today/
Make him a happy home
Waste not his hard earned wage.
And so he does not roam
Strive not to look your age.
Still in your hour of need
Let it be understood
No man could supersede,
Our sacred bond of sisterhood.
- Omigod You Guys! from the Legally Blonde musical soundtrack

And for once it might be grand
To have someone understand

I want so much more than they’ve got planned
